Tijdens de jaarlijkse 'Friends of Ireland'-lunch in het Witte Huis - welke elk jaar wordt gevierd ter herdenking van St. Patrick's Day - las Nancy Pelosi een gedicht voor van niemand minder dan U2-frontman Bono. Dit schijnt een jaarlijkse traditie te zijn, alleen dit jaar was het gedicht gewijd aan de oorlog in Oekraïne.
In een tweet licht Bono toe dat hij Pelosi normaal gesproken een humoristische limerick stuurt om te lezen tijdens de lunch. Dit jaar koos hij echter voor een onderwerp wat "helemaal niet grappig" is, namelijk de oorlog in Oekraïne.
Zelensky als Saint Patrick
Het gedicht begint met de herinnering aan hoe Saint Patrick van Ierland 'drove out the snake', om later de boze slangen te vergelijken met de Russische president Vladimir Poetin en Saint Patrick met de Oekraïense president Volodymyr Zelensky.
"Ireland's sorrow and pain / Is now the Ukraine", schreef Bono, "and Saint Patrick's name now Zelensky."
