- Ruxley impresses with griping story in 3FM Live Box: "I've never told this story before"
The English Ruxley - who you may remember as the frontman of the band Causes - paid a visit to Rob & Wijnand and the Ochtendshow (morning show) this morning at 3FM. Rupert Blackman, his real name, came by to perform his new single 'this song should not exist' with his new musical project under the alias Ruxley, with a gripping story behind it. On the song he processes the loss of his sister, who came to a brutal end 23 years ago. A story that entails a lot of media attention, and this is the first time he's publicly speaking out about it.
Rupert has been living in the Netherlands since 2008, except for a short break in England during Covid, and until 2013 he made music with his band Causes. A band that has previously been nominated for a 3FM Award and scored two 3FM Megahits with 'Teach Me How To Dance' and 'Walk On Water'.
"I've never told this story"
But there is one story that he has not spoken about in all his 3FM visits in the past. And now he speaks out about it for the first time. The story has to do with his new track 'this song should not exist', and is about his sister, Lucie Blackman. She passed away 23 years ago.
"I've been coming to see you for many years, but somehow I've never told this story," vertelt hij aan 3FM-dj Wijnand in de 3FM Live Box. "It's never been part of my of what I needed to say. The song is about losing people, about grief, about sorrow. It has had quite a big impact on social media. We're getting lots of responses from people how it's hitting home for people who have lost people."
It's taking me a very long time to write music directly about something like that.
While many people on social media resonate with Ruxley's song, his sister's loss is accompanied by a poignant story that has attracted a lot of media attention for years, and about which a documentary is now even appearing on Netflix.
Horror story
23 years ago Lucie, flight attendant, left for Japan. Here she met a wealthy Japanese, who eventually turned out to be a psychopath and brutally killed her. Rupert's family searched in vain for 6 months.
"It was a huge story in the UK, I was much younger. She went traveling to Japan, and she never came back. She was killed by a psychopath in Japan. She was missing for 6 months, nobody knew where she was."
"I've never told this story. I've never felt the need to. When I came back to Holland last year to decide to write music for myself and start this project Ruxley. I played some old Causes-songs to studios. And they were like: "These are great, but I don't believe you. What's the real story?" Then I thought, it's time to tell my story."
The grief never goes away. You just learn to carry it better. You get a little bit stronger, but it never gets lighter. But for me, I have an outlet. I'm lucky to have music.
'The Lucie Blackman Story'
The horror story has dominated the English tabloids for years. And Netflix will even release the documentary 'The Lucie Blackman Story' about it this next week. Rupert and his family have been approached several times in recent years to participate in this. But they declined:
"They've asked me and my family to be involved but we declined. We didn't want to be involved. A lot of time went by and it felt like digging up the past. There's lots of people still grieving about this story. So it's not something I'm involved in, not something I'm in, not something I've approved. But it's out there. In general it's quite a strange phenomenon cause people watch these shows a lot. True crime shows are quite popular. But often they don't think that there's real people and lives behind there."
To the people watching the trailer and documentary, he has this to say: "Watch it, do whatever you want. But maybe have a think about the actual people behind it and the actual impact it has had on people's live maybe."

'this song shouldn't exist'
The song that should never have been written is an extremely emotionally charged song for Rupert. And he hopes it can provide at least a little bit of support for other people who have also lost someone in their lives. Check out the live version of the track in the 3FM Live Box:
