Foals: "Dit album moet van alles zijn, maar niet tijdloos"

Pub

Vera ontmoet Yannis namelijk in een pub in Londen, The Old Nun's Head. Het is een van de plekken waar hij teksten schreef voor zowel Part 1 als Part 2, samen met nog een aantal andere pubs in de buurt. Hij woont in de wijk en wilde voor deze albums graag onder de mensen zijn: "I wanted to make a record about the outside world, about society. Being in that world helped me stay there, because everytime I'd look up I'd see people drinking in a very British environment!"

Foals is er best open over: de Brexit zint ze niet en de wereld moet veel harder in actie komen om klimaatverandering tegen te gaan. Deze politieke thema's sijpelen door in beide albums, waardoor ze de tijdsgeest heel duidelijk vangen. En dat is precies de bedoeling.

Yannis: "A lot of albums have the aim to be timeless, but we wanted these two albums to really be an archive of this period. An expression of all the insecurities, anxieties and conflictions that we feel in 2019. As a band we are very aware of Part 1 and Part 2 being a product of this time."

Zware kost

Dat klinkt allemaal vrij pessimistisch en tekstueel gezien klopt dat ook. Toch wil de band in eerste plaats muziek maken waar jij als luisteraar gewoon van kunt genieten. Yannis: "It's the fundamental heart of the band! Our music should be fun and gratifying, whether it's a big heavy riff or a dance beat. They're not meant to be a lecture, we want people to like it!"

Om het ook voor zichzelf leuk te houden schrappen ze af en toe nummers uit hun setlists. "If we get bored of something, we stop playing it. We got sick of 'Cassius' for a while. We play what we enjoy, cause then the audience will enjoy it more."

The Runner

De video voor ex-3FM Megahit 'The Runner' zit vol symboliek. Je kijkt naar Yannis die zijn duistere kant en psychologische issues probeert te overwinnen. Dat lukt hem aan het einde van de video, maar daar wacht hem een nieuwe uitdaging: de rest van de wereld.

Yannis: "Then you see the external world and you see that the battle there has been lost, that there's a much bigger challenge facing us outside. That's an important message: we often get preoccupied with our own problems, especially in times like these. We have to try to solve the wider problems that are outside ourselves."

De échte uitdaging

Is er elf jaar na de release van Antidotes nog steeds sprake van nervositeit vlak voordat er een album uitkomt? Ja. Zodra je een album uitbrengt is het er voor altijd, dus de band voelt wel druk om iets af te leveren dat écht goed is. Maar daar komt nog een andere uitdaging overheen: de luisteraars ook echt laten luisteren.

Yannis: "That's the real battle these days, getting people to actually listen to an album! Or even listening to one track all the way through, instead of skipping after thirty seconds."
