Beyoncé geeft met 'Black Is King' een moderne twist aan 'The Lion King'

Eigenlijk gewoon alledrie, want Beyoncé is Beyoncé niet zonder dat stapje extra. In Black Is King krijg je eigenlijk The Lion King nog een keer voorgeschoteld in 85 minuten, maar deze keer vertolkt door mensen in plaats van dieren. Simba is nu een klein jochie en die lachende hyena's zie je ook niet meer terug: in Black Is King zijn zij een motorbende.

Het verhaal wordt gedragen door visuals op de muziek van Beyoncé, afkomstig van haar filmsoundtrack voor The Lion King uit 2019. De film zit vol symboliek, geschiedenis en cultuur, als is 'ie volgens Beyoncé in eerste instantie bedoeld als viering: een viering van de breedte en schoonheid van de zwarte historie.

Zwarte geschiedenis met een moderne twist

Die viering heeft nu natuurlijk nóg meer impact door alle aandacht rondom Black Lives Matter. Zoals ze het zelf zegt op haar Instagram: "The events of 2020 have made the film’s vision and message even more relevant, as people across the world embark on a historic journey. We are all in search of safety and light. Many of us want change. I believe that when Black people tell our own stories, we can shift the axis of the world and tell our REAL history of generational wealth and richness of soul that are not told in our history books. With this visual album, I wanted to present elements of Black history and African tradition, with a modern twist and a universal message, and what it truly means to find your self-identity and build a legacy.

Ze vervolgt: "I only hope that from watching, you leave feeling inspired to continue building a legacy that impacts the world in an immeasurable way. I pray that everyone sees the beauty and resilience of our people. This is a story of how the people left most broken have extraordinary gifts."
