Jack Garratt in 5 Essential Tracks

Wat gebeurt er als je Jack Garratt vraagt naar zijn vijf essentiële liedjes? Dan wordt Jack heeeeeel erg blij! Alleen vond hij het onmogelijk om maar 5 tracks te bespreken.

Jack: "Just, even, I, it’s impossible, it’s impossible! Five? It’s not possible, I can’t. I can’t do it. I can’t do it!"

Als Jack nieuwe muziek of een artiest ontdekt, dan duikt hij er helemaal in. Dan blijft het niet bij dat liedje. En omdat Jack dus niet kan kiezen heeft hij voor een andere aanpak gekozen bij de 5 Essential Tracks:

Jack: "So instead of five songs, I just have a cluster of artists and genres and stuff that I will try and pick a song from. When I get into a kind of music I find that I drown within an artist rather than just a single song."

Zoals Jack aan het begin van het gesprek al had voorspeld, ging het niet lukken om maar 5 essentiële liedjes te kiezen. Om precies te zijn, noemde hij er 13 met naam en titel.

"Tom Waits is geweldig. Ik ben echt een beetje verliefd op die man."

Jack trapt af met een van zijn grote helden: Tom Waits.

Jack: "He’s like a true artist, he’s the best, he’s amazing. I’m so in love with that man, I’m so romanticised by him."

'Mr. Siegal'

Die liefde voor Tom Waits begon met het album Used Songs, en specifiek met 'Mr. Siegal'. Dat nummer greep hem meteen.

Jack: "It opens with the lyric: ‘I spent all my money in a mexican whorehouse, across the street from a catholic church.’ It’s my favorite lyric of all time. I remember listening to that and the way that Tom sings it as well, it’s just effortlessly impressive and just cool."

'Ol 55', 'Martha', 'Johnsburg, Illinois'

Maar dan luistert hij op advies van een vriend naar het debuutalbum van Tom Waits en is hij opnieuw zwaar onder de indruk van de man, die op dat album weer een hele andere kant van zichzelf laat horen.

Jack: "And I go back and I listen to this record and it’s like, it’s bar songs, it’s folk songs, it’s acoustic, it’s Tom Waits singing the clean voice, it’s like nothing I’ve heard before."

Het hele album raakt hem. Één favoriet ervan noemen, is dan ook onmogelijk.

Jack: "And I remember listening to a song on that record called ‘Martha’, which is beautiful. It’s ‘Martha’, it’s ‘Ol’ 55’, it’s a song about his wife called ‘Johnsburg, Illinois’, which I love, it’s a minute and a half long and it’s just a love letter to his wife."

Jack hoeft ook niet lang na te denken over de artiest van track nummer twee. Naast Tom Waits is er nog een grote held: Stevie Wonder.

Stevie Wonder duikt al vroeg op in het leven van Jack, dankzij de goede muzieksmaak van zijn ouders.

Jack: "I remember growing up as a kid and having his records playing around the house. Mom and dad would always play the music that they loved and I’m very lucky that the music that they loved is just great, well written, well respected, music that I still listen to today."

Songs In The Key Of Life

Ze draaiden platen van The Beatles, Paul Simon, David Bowie, maar wat hem het meest is bijgebleven is Stevie Wonder, en vooral zijn album Songs In The Key Of Life. Hij snapte als jochie nog niet de schrijnende boodschap van het album, maar hij had wel door dat het bijzonder was.

Jack: "I didn’t understand any of that, I just knew there was something and I loved the melody. That whole record is full of timeless songs."

'I Wish'

Dankzij de titeltrack van de film Wild Wild West met Will Smith, maakt Jack kennis met het fenomeen sampling en met hiphop. In de soundtrack zit een sample van Stevie Wonders 'I Wish'.

Jack: "I remember that song and then I remember like loving that song and my mom going ‘You know where that’s from right?’. So mom knew where that song was from and I fell in love with Stevie Wonder."

Als het om samples gaat, is Kanye West de grote meester voor Jack.

Jack: Like one of the reasons I got into producing was everything that Kanye West opened me up to when I started to get into hiphop and started getting into Chicago hiphop especially.

Arrogantie van Kanye

Jack is alleen niet zo gecharmeerd van Kanye's periode waarin hij riep hoe geweldig hij wel niet was.

"There is no one better at sampling then Kanye West. A hunderd percent. But he should just never admit to that."

"I would get really frustrated and disappointed in that because as a fan of him I don’t want him to think he is the best at what he does. Because what the fuck is he gonna do when he wakes up the next day."

"That’s just my opinion of, especially about perfection. I don’t believe you can achieve it but I believe you should try. What it does is, you wake up every day with passion and fire and goals in your heart."

Kanye in de auto

De fascinatie met Kanye komt rond zijn zeventiende. Dan zit Jack midden in zijn hiphop fase en een hele zomer lang is Kanye zijn auto-soundtrack.

Jack: It was a year when I was about seventeen, the summer when I learned to drive, the only thing I listened to was Kanye West and Common. That was the only things that would blurt out in the speaker system of my car.

'Jesus Walks'

Het nummer 'Jesus Walks' maakt grote indruk op Jack.

"I remember listening to ‘Jesus Walks’ by Kanye and being kind of blown away by the passion of it. There was a guy who was confident and you could hear this kind of arrogance but then there was something to prove. Yeah it definitely had an impact on me. It’s the simplicity of it."

Als Jack nog twee nummers mag noemen, gaat hij helemaal los en benut hij zijn resterende interviewtijd door zoveel mogelijk toffe acts en nummers te noemen die een invloed hebben gehad op hem en zijn muziek.

"I can’t find a song cause they’re all amazing but uhm - Off The Wall the Michael Jackson record. Just anyone of those. You’ll be fine. Probably ‘Rock With You’ actually, in terms of songwriting and production it’s unbelievable, it’s fantastic".

Ook 'Heroes' van Bowie noemt hij.

"One of the greatest pop songs ever written, and it doesn’t have a chorus. It’s amazing! It’s unbelievable."

Een nieuwere naam is Taylor McFerrin. Zijn geluid heeft een grote invloed gehad op Jack debuutalbum Phase.

Taylor McFerrin released a record called Early Riser, it has a song on it called ‘The Antidote’ which features the vocals of Nai Palm, who is the lead singer from Hiatus Kaiyote. That song ‘The Antidote’ is one of the songs that inspired everything Phase became.

Anderson .Paak

Ook roept hij nog snel even Son Lux, Flying Lotus en Thundercat. Die in dezelfde hiphop jazz scene zitten als Anderson .Paak. Met die laatste werkte hij samen voor de track 'Worry', wat hij een hele grote eer vond.

"I’m very very proud of that moment. And just happy to have been a part of that collaborative relationship. Yeah, he’s a fucking genius."
