James Bay: "Ik houd van de drama in de muziekindustrie"

Deze week check je bij 3FM de 5 Essential Tracks van James Bay, in een filmpje wat maar liefst veertien minuten duurt. En omdat hij zo verrekte spraakzaam was, hebben we nog wat bonusmateriaal liggen uit het interview! Check de 'deleted scenes' hieronder.

Lekker testen

Tijdens het maken van Electric Light heeft James op een andere manier gespeeld met verschillende geluiden en instrumenten. "At the time I thought I was just making demos, so I was throwing crazy different sounds that I hadn't used before at my new music. Analog synthesizer sounds and programmed drums... Smashed up against organic drums and using guitars in different ways. I was quickly falling in love with these new sounds!"

James heeft zichzelf op album twee dus wel een klein beetje opnieuw uitgevonden, maar gitaarfans, wees gerust. Gitaren zullen altijd een belangrijk onderdeel blijven in zijn liedjes. "They absolutely belong in my songs, they're like an extra limb to me. I can't live without guitars and guitarists, it's a huge part of what I do!"

Inspiratie 2.0

Wat James ook hielp bij dat hele opnieuw uitvinden van zichzelf, was naar andere artiesten luisteren. Voor zijn debuutalbum Chaos And The Calm luisterde hij onder andere veel naar Aretha Franklin, Ryan Adams en Derek And The Dominos. Voor album nummer twee pakte hij dat anders aan, met opzet.

James: "I love my first album and I love the songs on it, but those artists really inspired my own sound on that first album. I don't want to listen to that anymore, because I listened too much to it already. Too much of one thing will get boring. It was all about listening to different stuff, cause I didn't want to make the same type of music again. I wanted to try and inspire something else out of me."

Singles kiezen is een bitch

Oke, hij heeft dus een heel album volgepend met liedjes die anders klinken dan het materiaal van zijn eerste album. Goed verhaal, maar hoe kies je dan welke tracks je in de spotlight gaat zetten? Da's volgens James dus best nog wel een dingetje. Je begint met kiezen op instinct, maar je komt uiteindelijk altijd uit op een compromis.

"Critics will always tell you it's the wrong choice, but you just have to be able to laugh about it with your team. One critic will go like 'Oh, that's cool! Good for him!' and the other will go 'Great, I can't wait to really dig in on this guy.' That's how music has been for years. It's fantastic, all the drama and all the back and forth. I adore it."
