Twenty One Pilots: "It was important to counteract the universal darkness with something brighter"

Vorige maand bracht Twenty One Pilots het album Scaled and Icy uit, waarvan eerste single 'Shy Away' direct werd bekroond tot 3FM Megahit. Het is daarnaast ook dé track waar Josh het meest naar uitziet om live op een festival te spelen: "I sometimes imagine being on the other side of the stage and think which song I would want to hear and which ones are easiest to sing along to and it feels like that one would be really fun".

Het album heeft ten opzichte van eerder werk een opvallend vrolijk karakter. De drummer legt uit dat dit voor hen een belangrijke manier was om de 'universal darkness' waar de wereld zich de afgelopen periode in begaf te bestrijden. Maar zónder hun eigen sound te verliezen.

"It felt important to try and counteract the universal darkness that the world was feeling with something a bit more brighter (...) we've always been interested in trying new things and what's great is is that no two albums have to sound the same. if you start listening to Vessel and then Blurryface it's pretty different. I don't know what people expected, but we always change it up a little bit. But we try to keep the core sound."

Onuitputtelijke energie

Wie ooit bij een optreden is geweest van Twenty One Pilots, weet dat de energie van het podium afspat. De backflips vliegen je om de oren. Maar hoe blijven ze toch zo fit? Josh legt aan Vera uit dat hij er hard voor werkt maar ook angst heeft om ooit die energie te verliezen: "The biggest thing that I fight against is time and age. 20 years from now, I wanna be able to play the same shows as we played 10 years ago. That's why I got into running and boxing and continue to play drums. I wanna be able to keep up with it."

Pinkpop

Met plezier blikt Josh terug op hun optreden op Pinkpop in 2014. Volgend jaar keert Twenty One Pilots terug naar het festival. Zien we je daar?
