'It's Not Living (If It's Not With You)' van The 1975 klinkt in eerste instantie als een leuk liefdesliedje, maar dat is 't dus niet per se. Of eigenlijk helemaal niet. Frontman Matty Healy schreef dit nummer over zijn heroïneverslaving. En jij gaat 'm deze week vaak voorbij horen komen, want de 3FM-dj's hebben 'm verkozen tot 3FM Megahit!
Eerlijk schrijven
Matty dealt al jaren met verschillende verslavingen en hij deelt daar best veel over. Zo gaat het nummer 'UGH!' over zijn cocaïneverslaving en deze dus over het nog nét wat heftigere broertje heroïne. Een greep uit de lyrics: "I can't stop sweating or control my feet // Got a 20 stone monkey that I just can't beat // It's true that all I do is sit and think about you."
De monkey is een referentie naar de term 'monkey on my back', die inhoudt dat je last hebt van een drugsverslaving of zware last. Matty zegt dat de aap '20 stone' weegt, 127 kilo.
Eind 2017 bracht Matty zeven weken door in een afkickkliniek en hij is clean sindsdien. Toch is zijn verslaving meerdere malen terug te vinden op het nieuwe album. Hij vertelt aan Billboard: "I don't have things that I want to write about that aren't exactly what I feel day by day. The problem I have now is that this is my truth, and I feel like I can't negotiate properly with the world if I can’t tell the truth."
