Lizzo over genre-overstijgende liveshows, naakt optreden en kant-en-klaar-liedjes

Alle begin is Beyoncé

Lizzo skipte op haar tiende een les Engels om Destiny's Child te zien optreden in de Walmart. Dat werd het moment waarop ze doorkreeg dat ze de muziek in wilde. "I was watching them sing and I wanted to make people feel the way I was feeling at that moment. From then on I was dead set on being a performing artist, with or without flute, rapping, whatever. I just had to do it!"

Twintig jaar later heeft ze twee albums volgerapt en heeft haar dwarsfluit Sasha Flute (naar Beyoncé's alter ego Sasha Fierce) een eigen Instagram-account, maar heeft ze het popicoon nog niet ontmoet. Daar denkt ze wél lang en diep over na, vertelde ze in een interview met The Cut: "I was just sitting on the toilet, peeing, thinking about Beyoncé saying my name, and I swear I got wet! It’s gonna happen. I can hear her say it. Lizzoooooh."

Goals

Elk jaar heeft Lizzo goede voornemens gehad (én gehaald!), behalve voor 2019. Alles gaat gewoonweg te snel, dus denkt ze niet meer in voornemens maar in mijlpalen. En die tikt ze snel weg: ze verkocht in 2019 voor het eerst een tour uit, trad op in twee grote Amerikaanse TV-shows, scoorde miljoenen streams op 'Juice' en de release van haar derde album staat gepland voor april.

Toch staat er stiekem nog wel een groot doel op haar wishlist: Madison Square Garden uitverkopen. "I can't wait to play that one someday. I don't care much about trophies or awards, I just want to play beautiful stages and experience certain moments. If I sell out the Garden, I can tell myself that I made it!"

Genre is voorbij

Ze gelooft niet meer in genres als het gaat om concerten. "Genre is over. We hold on to genres for reference, so we can kinda understand what we're listening to. But we are creating a new shift in artistry! I feel like my identity is more important than the genre my music 'belongs to'. People don't think 'Hey I wanna see a good rap show today, I'll go see Lizzo', but they just want to see a good concert. They want an experience with this artist named Lizzo, so that's what I bring to the table."

Bij een goede show hoort ook een goede outfit. Wat haar volgende podiumpakje wordt? Géén podiumpakje! "I wanna perform naked sometime, but I haven't figured out how or where. I'm not sure if it's legal, but it is my show, isn't it? It's MY world, haha!"

Kwetsbaar zijn op social media

Wie haar Instagram bekijkt, krijgt nu al veel skin te zien. Lizzo in lingerie, Lizzo twerkend, Lizzo topless, Lizzo die haar nieuwe album promoot in een stripclub: this girl likes to party en je mag elk detail zien! Maar er zijn ook dingen die ze bewust niét post.

Kwetsbare momenten of posts over onderwerpen die haar veel doen, belanden lang niet altijd online. "I'm struggling to find out how vulnerable I'm allowed to be on social media. Internet culture can be so unforgiving! They'll roast or cancel you for anything these days." Als het gaat om politieke standpunten of grote dingen die gaande zijn in de wereld, denkt ze goed na over wat ze wel of niet zegt.

"I have my feelings about them of course, outside of social media, but I pick my battles. I've gotten some backlash twice, for issues that I have now learned from. It's all a learning experience for me. I honestly don't give a fuck what people think about my body or my music, but it's different with these bigger issues like the R. Kelly documentary, you know. The world is changing, shit we thought was cool 10 years ago is fucked uuup! There's a lot to learn and I'm learning. I like to promise people that I'll change, though. My music is gonna evolve, but so will my philosophies. I'm learning to be a better person and make an active change, also through my social media."

Waar luistert Lizzo nu veel naar?

"I like pretty shit right now! Ariana Grande really puts me in a vibe. I always liked her songs, but something happened two years ago. Energetically she tapped into this thing when everyone was looking at her, feeling for her. Ever since I've felt this emotional connection to her and the music turned out to be pretty damn amazing!"

Kant-en-klaar is een no go

Ariana schrijft hyperpersoonlijke teksten waarvoor ze de inspiratie recht uit haar leven haalt, de aanpak die Lizzo ook hanteert voor haar eigen muziek. Haar leven wordt niet breed uitgemeten in de pers, maar ze deelt wel alles in haar liedjes. "I am my own TMZ, you know! I'm sharing my life story in all these songs."

Ze krijgt dus geen liedjes in haar mailbox die kant-en-klaar zijn, ze maakt alles zelf. Ook als ze middenin een enorme promo-tour zit, zoals nu. "This promo schedule is kicking my ass so biiiitch, sometimes I DO want a motherfucking email with some readymade songs in it! But I'm so deeply involved, I could never record it. Nobody can write a Lizzo song, only I can do that."

3FM Live List

Lizzo staat op #7 in de 3FM Live List 2019. Als 3FM-dj Frank vraagt wat mensen van haar show op Best Kept Secret kunnen verwachten, begint ze meteen te lachen. "It's gonna be so fun! It's me, my dj, the big girls as my dancers, Sasha Flute will be there, there's twerking... Mass twerking, even! First I teach them how, then I make the whole crowd twerk."
